With the holiday season quickly approaching, we’re all getting excited for the joy and laughter that Christmas brings! Since its religious origins, Christmas has evolved into a worldwide cultural and commercial spectacle, with traditions and practices that are both religious and secular in nature still widely present today.
In terms of its historical origins, our modern Christmas has a combination of Christian, Pagan and folk traditions. Father Christmas and his other European variations weren’t traditionally associated with gift-giving but came from old Pagan ideas about spirits who travelled in the sky during midwinter. The concept of gift-giving comes from Christian belief, which stems from the gifts the Magi brought Jesus when he was born.
In the early years of Christianity, Easter was the main holiday and the birth of Jesus was not actually celebrated. Many people believe that the Church chose December 25th to integrate traditions of Pagan winter solstice festivals and their associated traditions. By holding Christmas at the same time as some of these festivals, church leaders believed that it was more likely to be positively embraced, and by the Middle Ages, Christianity had very nearly replaced pagan religion.
Over the years, Christmas has evolved into the holiday that we all know and love and has held its position as the biggest holiday of the year. Things like Santa Claus, carolling, tree decorating and midnight mass are still a big part of the festivities today, all of which come from a mix of customs from around the world.
Over the years, Christmas has been reinvented as a nostalgic holiday to spend time with family and friends and celebrate the joy and generosity that’s associated with the holiday season. As we’re right in the middle of summer during this time of year, many Australians spend the holiday outdoors – going to the beach for the day or having a barbecue with the extended family.
